JOHN CONSTABLE'S long and prolific career made him one of the major "British landscape painters of the eighteenth century. He studied his native countryside carefully and made drawings and oil sketches in the open air as well as working on large pamnngs at his London studio during the winter months.
Essential Constable looks at all aspects of Constable's art, with detailed commentary on 120 of his works. Most of these are instantly recognisable as his most famous and important pieces; others are less wellknown but they are all equally essential to Constable's artistic and philosophic development.
JOHN CONSTABLE has become one of the most famous and influential landscape artists of the eighteenth century. He was "very nrolific and wanted to show that nature changed from hour to hour; his beliefs and techniques acted almost as a precursor to the Impressionist movement which was to come a hundred years later.
His most famous works were often of the countryside around his native Suffolk; paintings such as Flatfard Mill and The Haywain caused a great stir when they were first exhibited, for their ability to project a moment in the mood of nature and time.
