“I like the idea that one's work is a constant, even trajectory of development, but I think that's a romantic idea. I think it's more realistic to think that there are periods where you work through a set of ideas or ambitions from a number of different directions and then those ideas start to become exhausted. What comes next is less clear but is infused with a feeling of restlessness with what you are doing. It's not so comfortable, but it's necessary, because it will lead to the next thing.”
The innovative, distinct, and pleasurable work of Michael Maltzan is a timely subject for the Heinz Architectural Center. Curator Raymund Ryan has assembled and presents the work to great advantage, making it both legible and memorable.People understand and experience architecture differently, but perhaps the most salient characteristic of Maltzan's work is its sophisticated orchestrations of movement through space--as this show makes abundantly clear. The achievements of so young a practitioner complement the evolving identity of the Heinz Architectural Center, itself a relatively new addition within Carnegie Museum of Art. A telling hybrid of shelter, social order, and ornament, architecture is a welcome addition to our holdings of paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints, photographs, film, and video.
