二战以后的西方史学界发生了两次重大变化，一是自20世纪50年代中期以来的“新史学”挑战了以兰克为代表的传统史学，社会史逐渐取代了政治史，从而成为史学研究的主流。这一时期的主要史学流派有：法国年鉴学派、英国马克思主义历史学派、美国的社会科学史学派等，其中年鉴学派影响最大。到了70年代后期，肇始于法国的“新文化史”（又称“社会文化史”）取代“新史学”成为西方史学界的新宠。
