The Triumph of Painting, the title of a three-part landmark exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery in London, refers to painting as the fundamental root of artistic expression. At the start of the twenty-first century, when every possible medium is valid as a creative means and the artistic options are endless, we are in fact witnessing the vigorous reassertion of painting. Unlike previous painting traditions, painting in Europe in the nineties advanced with new and wider references to the whole realm of visual culture, embracing architecture, advertising, cinema, fashion and, in particular, photography.
