The work of Gisue Hariri and Mojgan Hariri represents modernism at its most optimistic, and at its most realistic. Their designs emerge out of a belief that modernism remains a potent cultural force, but that it has an obligation to respond to the realities of human life and, indeed, that it is likely to realize its highest potential when it acknowledges rather than denies the importance of symbol, of memory, and of sensory experience. For Hariri and Hariri, modern architecture is neither austere nor derivative. The Hariris seek to make buildings that acknowledge the past without replicating it, and that celebrate inventiveness of form without interfering with the processes of daily life. Another way to put this would be to say that the architecture of the Hariris places a high value on both imagination and reality. Theirs is an architecture of balance. It is at once powerful and restrained, selfassured and understated.
The Hariris'work ,known for its high style ,exquisite craft. and intellectual rigor, transcends ephemeral fashion, making the duo perennially fascinating to design audiences worldwide .In addition to the Digital and Sagaponachouses, among the projects featured in Hariri & Hariri:Houses-illustrated in plans ,drawings ,and splendid fullcolor photography-are a new house for the AQUAdevelopment in Miami Beach (planned by renowned urban designers Andres Duany and Eizabeth PlaterZyberk);spectacular urban renovations in New York's Upper East Side ,Greenwich Village ,and soho ;and magnificent new houses across the country from Virginia to San Francisco to Connecticut,International projects include an innovative yet rustic Canadian country cottage and two houses in the Netherlands .These and other projects presented in Hariri&Hariri:Houses all demonstrate the rare ability of the Hariris to combine modernist rigor with what New Yorker architecture critic Paul Goldberger has identified as an understanding of the patterns of everyday life .
