This first survey of his virtuosity in a range of media reveals links between his early designs in metal and gem engravings to subsequent engraved glass vessels, cast bronze medals and, most recently, glass sculptures combining carving and casting techniques. For the first time many of these diverse works held in both public and private collections are illustrated in book form. Superb photography by Cliff Guttridge draws the reader effortlessly into the magical world of Pennell's art.
Ronald Pennell is arguably the most celebrated engraver of glass working in Britain today. His oeuvre spans a range of media, from medals to gemstones and glass, unique within British contemporary craft practice. Hitherto he has received little formal exposure in print in England although his works have been acquired by many major public collections. On the world stage, however, he has been received with the greatest critical acclaim and he continues to be awarded the most prestigious of international prizes. He has a particular affinity with the Czech Republic and the artistic traditions of Central Europe.
