This publication and the accompanying exhibition aim to explode these myths by seeking out the parallels between Insider and Outsider Art, and the impact of unknown Outsiders on some of the greatest names of twentieth century art. The exhibition considers Insiders (such as James Ensor, Philip Guston and Henri Rousseau) and Outsiders (such as Henry Oarger, aadge Gill and Adolf Wiilfli) as the two sides of the same 'modernist' tendency that share a common discourse, connecting the visual arts to the social sciences, including anthropology, sociology, psychology and psychoanalysis.
