"Art for All" is the fundamental credo of Gilbert & George, who have been active in England since 1967 and are recognised throughout the world as being among the most interesting and significant artists on the international contemporary art scene.Their main objective is to produce 'democratic' art, with a broad communicative range,that breaks down the barriers between art and life and delves deeply into the human condition, thoughts and emotions - particularly in relation to sex, racial differences,religion and politics.Gilbert & George are convinced that an artist must consume and sacrifice himself personally for what he produces. They therefore appear in their works as "living sculptures", either physically or in reproduction form.The General Jungle or Carrying on Sculpting (1971) is composed of 23 drawings in charcoal on canvas paper and is one of the rare works by Gilbert & George in this technique. Conceived by the artists as sculptures, the drawings in this series go against the expectations of viewers familiar with their predilection for photography and performance art.The first drawing of the series, acquired by MAXXI in 2003, is entitled As Day Breaks over Us We Rise into Our Vacuum and constitutes the highlight of the show.With this exhibition, MAXXI continues its cultural policy of focussing on the contradictionsand conflicts of the human condition - elements that outline the reality of the world today and mark contemporary cultural and ideological boundaries of misunderstanding.On a global level, the language of art can provide us with the means to effectively share our experiences, regardless of geographical, theoretical, linguistic and cultural barriers. In this light, "Art for All" can serve as a dual invitation to grasp and interpreta work of art, as well as to interpret and overcome the hurdles that limit and condition dialogue and communication.
