Modern art begins with Manet. His legacy to the latter half of the 19th century affected every artist of note, and as Renoir said, for the Impressionists he was what Giotto or Cimabue were for the artists of Renaissance. To the genera tion that succeeded him Manet seemed to have invented an entirely new kind of painting, completely breaking away from the earlier tradition of depicting the external world accurately within the accepted style of the day. Manet claimed to paint what he saw, but he introduced two elements that were to alter the history of painting for ever.
