Modern Contemporary: Art Since 1980 at MoMA is a dynamic selection of artworks from the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first,all of them from the holdings of The Museum of Modern Art. The book illustrates over 580 works in all of the mediums represented in the collection-architecture and design, film and media, prints and illustrated books, painting and scutptur hotography, and drawing.by an internation rage of artists.First published in 2000,Modern Contemporary has now been revised to show recent arrivals in the collection, and the publication of this new edition celebrates the Museum’s reopening in its dramatically expanded and remodeted Manhattan building.Modern Contemporary: Art Since 1980 at MoMA features important works by such artists as Smith, Andy Warhot, Glenn Ligon, Cindy Sherman, Philippe Starck, and Stanley Kubrick, among many others.
When Modern Contemporary was first published, in 2000, it was meant to complement Open Ends, the third in a trilogy of exhibitions presented by The Museum of Modern Art in recognition of the millennium. Conceived as a compendium of works of art in the Museum’s collection made since 1960, Open Ends provided a glimpse into the Museum’s substantial holdings of contemporary art. Modern Contemporary, which focuses exclusively on the period after 1980, is being reissued now, with significant new additions by artists as varied as Tokujin Yoshioka, Glenn Ligon, Ellen Gallagher, Thomas Demand, Guillenno Kuitca, and Nathaniel Kahn, in celebration of the opening of the new Museum of Modern Art, designed by Yoshio Taniguchi. As such, this publication is more than just a second edition of a book; it is the continued documentation of the Museum’s important--and growing-collec-tion of contemporary art. Like the new Museum, with its dramatic galleries for contemporary art, Modern Contemporary embraces works of art from all of the Museum’s curatorial departments: Film and Media, Architecture and Design, Photography, Painting and Sculpture, Prints and Illustrated Books. and Drawings.
