This exhibition and its catalogue reappraise the figural sculpture of Elie Nadelman, whose work reflects a singular fusion of dassical and folk. Our thanks certainly begin with guest curator Suzanne Ramliak, who developed this project while a curator on the AFA staff. Ms. Ramliak's intelligence, energy, and meticulous eye have insured the quality of the exhibition and accompanying publication. We are particularly grateful to her for the perceptive essay she has contributed to the present volume. The other contributors to the catalogue deserve our gratitude as well: writer and art historian Avis Berman; Valerie J. Fletcher, curator of sculpture at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden; writer and curator Klaus Kertess; and Cynthia Nadelman, a writer and the artist's granddaughter and biographer. Each has made a unique and invaluable contribution.
