the design of shopping environments was becoming ever more complicated and sensitive. The early “build-it-and-they-will-come”atmosphere gave way to competitive pressures. The public was noticing which malls were the most pleasant or least deadly to visit. As malls proliferated, more were built in localities where architectural appeal could be helpful in gaining permission to build.Exterior envelopes demanded more subtle response to context, and the special spaces between the selling areas demanded more distinction. An atrium now called for more than a fountain and a nondescript skylight.
Since the firm’s founding in 1984,civic architecture, in its broadest definition, is the domain that Altoon + Porter Architects has claimed for its practice. The reward for that decision is the focused attention of each of the four partners in their area of specialization.Ronald A. Ahoon, FAIA, is the partner in charge of planning and design services;James E Porter, AIA, is the chief administrative partner;Carl E Meyer, AIA, is the partner for management services, responsible for assuring the delivery process;and Gary K. Dempster, AIA,is the partner for technical services.Over the years, the firm has evolved an adaptable aesthetic that allows Altoon + Porter to focus on the specific context, precedent, or tradition of the individual project situation and to respond with an innovative, integrated approach that meets design quality and performance goals within strict financial parameters. The firm’s portfolio includes commercial retail, office, hotel, and entertainment facilities as well as institutional buildings. Muhiuse complexes that demand a skillful mix of these elements are a growing component of the practice.
