全书分为两部分进行系统梳理论述，部分介绍神农架的自然社会经济概况及中药资源地理分布情况，第二部分以中药资源的基原自然属性（科属种）为纲，重点收载神农架中药资源的基本信息，囊括药用植物、药用动物、药用矿物资源，其中有抢先发售列入神农架资源目录，内容包括科名、种名、中文名拼音、分布丰度、保护等级等。其中，所有植物、动物的拉丁学名，均经过中药资源专家和动植物分类专家联合考证，吸收了动植物分类学的近期新进展，订正了原来的一些错误。同时，它以英文形式出版，有利于提升神农架中药资源的靠前影响，助力中医药文化“走出去”。
