《英国文学选读》是一部体现人类文化知识积累、继承优良传统、反映先进教育理念的专业教材。本教材具有基础性、专业性、系统性特点，自2001年问世后，已多次再版，受到广大师生欢迎。2002年《英国文学选读》作为“英语专业系列教材”之一，获得“全国普通高等学校优秀教材一等奖”，先后入选普通高等教育“十五”“十一五”国家级规划教材，“十二五”普通高等教育本科国家级规划教材，2013年入选江苏省高等学校重点教材，2021年在首届全国教材建设奖评选中获全国优秀教材二等奖。
此次修订是在《英国文学选读》第四版基础上进行调整、补充和完善，使之适应时代发展和专业教学的需要。减去三个单元，补充了5个选自《贝奥武甫》《鲁滨逊漂流记》《格列佛游记》《弗兰肯斯坦》《织工马南》的语篇，替换了康拉德和石黑一雄两位作家的作品选篇。第五版每个单元设计了“比较视野”，将推进外语课程思政建设任务落到实处。
