中国考古已从落后而居世界前列；同时，西方常有学者怀疑中国宗教的存在，其实宗教美术考古资源非常丰富。该成果体量大，可以全面反映考古成果，从而为宗教、美术，以及交叉学科研究提供理论张力和空间。该成果有考古报告、研究文献（含学术关注度表）和遗存年表三大块，在完整性上很突出：首先，有着完整的信息资源。努力穷尽所有考古报告信息，覆盖专业期刊、专题出版物，以及稀有材料三个资源。其次，有着完整的信息转化体系。本书设立考古报告、研究文献和学术关注度三个数据体系，相关信息尽量保留，比如所有已发表的遗存平面图。再次，有第一次完整的遗存年表。本书创新制作了覆盖墓室壁画、佛教美术、道教美术、海上宗教美术的遗存年表，为学术界第一次。
