As a child helived in Memphis, Tennessee, then in an orphanage, and with variousrelatives - each proved painful, yet formative experiences which heeventually wrote about in his autobiography, Black Boy. Wright lefthome at fifteen and in 1934 went to Chicago, where in 1935 he beganto work on the Federal Writers' Project. His first book, Uncle Tom'sChildren, a collection of novellas, was published in 1938 and Wrightwas awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in the following year. Wright went on to write many more essay collections, non-fictionbooks and novels, including The Outsider and Native Son, of whichparts are extracted here. Through his writing, Wright confrontedthe issues of race relations and the plight of African Americans headon. Because of this his work has often been marked by controversyand impassioned criticism, even from otherwise supportive con-temporaries, such as James Baldwin, who took particular exceptionto the character of Bigger Thomas.
